The Sensex ended down 170.62 points or 0.7 percent at 24623.34, and the Nifty slipped 45.65 points or 0.6 percent at 7486.15.
About 1186 shares have advanced, 1415 shares declined, and 147 shares are unchanged.
Hindalco, HDFC, Maruti, Bharti and Cipla were top gainers while BHEL, Reliance, GAIL, Infosys and L&T were losers in the Sensex.
